What It Takes to Film a Hunt: The Basics For the Amateurs!
All of us here at SHO just recently began trying to film our own hunts and trying to capture the rush of adrenaline that buck fever gives you. While we only have a few successful whitetail hunts in our bag, we quickly learned what works for filming and what doesn't.
In our very first hunt, episode 1, team members Weston Schrank and Jordan Kaelin were only using a GoPro Hero to film their hunt, not allowing them to zoom in on the doe before the shot was taken. GoPros are great for capturing shots of the hunter in their stand, shooting out of a blind, or any close proximity filming or what is called " B roll". We have found the cheapest and most effective way to utilize GoPros in the stand is by simply attaching them to a 3 arm bow hanger (as shown above). If your a one man filming team the go pro is the way to go to get started. Ranging from $200-$400 they offer a great HD quality and durable, waterproof, cases.
After the first successful hunt caught on film, we wanted to get better shots, closer shots, so many invested in a hand held camera such as the Sony Handycam. They handycams allowed much better quality sound and having the ability to zoom made the footage a lot better! A beginning simple to use camcorder will cost you around $300 dollars. We strongly suggest extra battery pack and memory card, Muddy micromount and a realtree 4 or 3 arm tree hanger.
In the end however, all you really need is any type video camer, whether it's an iphone, a GoPro, or a $10000 video camera, just get out in the stand and film it! Contact a member about getting your films included in upcoming episodes!
